ULTRAMAN: AUSTRALIAN MADE

DOCUMENTARY / IN DEVELOPMENT

Ultraman: Towards the Future is the tenth
series of a cult Japanese television show that
was made in the early 1990s. Brainchild of Eiji Tsuburaya, creator of Godzilla, it was intended as the franchise’s breakout season – targeting
an English-speaking market for the first time. Production was shifted offshore to Adelaide, Australia, but the making of the beloved show played out like a comedy of errors, with a few horrifying workplace dangers thrown in for good measure.

Ultraman: Australian Made revisits the Ultraman legacy and the ill-fated 1990s Japanese-Australian co-production that brought the South Australian industry to its knees. The documentary brings together the original cast and crew to reconstruct scenes on location and explain how a series of disasters in front of and behind the lens not only kept the franchise alive, but miraculously created a lasting legacy.
